About Sustainable Development Policy & Practice

Sustainable Development Policy & Practice is a knowledgebase of intergovernmental activities following up on the decisions taken at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). It was launched in December 2010 by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) Reporting Services, which manages and is fully responsible for the content posted on Sustainable Development Policy & Practice. Information on United Nations activities is provided in cooperation with the UN system agencies, funds and programmes through the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (UN CEB) Secretariat.

The Sustainable Development Policy & Practice Icon

The Sustainable Development Policy & Practice Icon The icon for Sustainable Development Policy & Practice plays off the icons of IISD RS' other knowledgebases – Climate Change Policy & Practice, Biodiversity Policy & Practice, and SIDS Policy & Practice – by using the shape of a globe, but segmenting it into three sections to represent the three pillars of sustainable development. The leaf represents environmental protection, the cogwheel represents economic development, and the human faces represent social development. Each segment flows into the next, conveying the connections among the pillars, and when arranged together, they form a whole. The colors used in the icon - gold for sunshine, green for the natural world, and blue for water - reflect recognized images of sustainable development. The icon was created by Canadian graphic designer Joanne Laval.
