The Sustainable Development Policy & Practice Icon

The Sustainable Development Policy & Practice Icon The icon for Sustainable Development Policy & Practice plays off the icons of IISD RS' other knowledgebases – Climate Change Policy & Practice, Biodiversity Policy & Practice, and SIDS Policy & Practice – by using the shape of a globe, but segmenting it into three sections to represent the three pillars of sustainable development. The leaf represents environmental protection, the cogwheel represents economic development, and the human faces represent social development. Each segment flows into the next, conveying the connections among the pillars, and when arranged together, they form a whole. The colors used in the icon - gold for sunshine, green for the natural world, and blue for water - reflect recognized images of sustainable development. The icon was created by Canadian graphic designer Joanne Laval.
