The eighth session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from 3-7 February 2014, in New York, US. Event: Gender, Water and Development Conference 2014 [viewed]

This conference will consider how to address gender, poverty and water challenges across Africa under the theme of 'Gender, Water and Development: The Untapped Connection'. The conference is hosted by the Water Research Commission of South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa, the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Women for Water Partnership. AMCOW developed the Policy and Strategy for Mainstreaming Gender in the Water Sector in Africa, which identifies seven strategic objectives for member States and water authorities. These sub-themes are: formulating and implementing gender in water policy; mobilizing human and financial resources; implementing projects through economic empowerment and gendered approaches; conducting, sharing and implementing research and operational knowledge; mainstreaming gender in human and institutional capacity development; promoting cooperation and coordination to mainstream gender in the water sector; and supporting gender equality in the water sector through monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

Incoming President Outlines Priorities for UNGA 68 [viewed]

John-Ashe10 July 2013: John Ashe, the incoming President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), has outlined six priorities for the 68th session. In a statement to the Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2014 Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Ashe said UNGA 68 will focus on: the role of women, youth and civil society; human rights and the rule of law; South-South, Triangular cooperation and information and communications technology (ICT) for development; the role of partnerships; ensuring peaceful societies; and water, sanitation and sustainable development.
