Civil Society Reacts to Proposed SDGs [viewed]

OWGJuly 2014: In reaction to the final outcome of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which it proposed SDGs at the conclusion of the 13th session (OWG 13), a number of Major Groups and civil society organizations have released papers and press releases commenting on the proposal. The majority of reactions suggest the outcome is a significant step forward, while also highlighting specific concerns. Many groups expressed appreciation for the OWG's inclusiveness, noting that full and meaningful participation of civil society is being recognized as an essential aspect of the new global agenda.

Event: First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport [viewed]

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

UNGA Concludes Structured Dialogues on Technology Facilitation [viewed]

UNGA23 July 2014: The UN General Assembly held the fourth "structured dialogue" for Member States, the private sector, and civil society to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The co-moderators of the dialogue will submit a report, along with elements for a procedural resolution, to the UNGA President by the end of July, and expect to receive further guidance in early September.

Event: Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) [viewed]

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Kutesa Confirms Theme for 69th UNGA [viewed]

UNGA18 July 2014: Sam Kutesa, UN General Assembly (UNGA) president-elect, announced that the theme for the 69th UNGA session will be ‘Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.' UN Member States will be invited to comment on the theme during the 69th General Debate (beginning on 24 September 2014).

BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.

UNGA High-Level Debate Discusses Investment in Africa [viewed]

UNGA17 July 2014: Participants recognized Africa's promising growth potential at a UN General Assembly (UNGA) High-level Thematic Debate on the role of investment in the region. The debate focused on ‘Promotion of investment in Africa and its catalytic role in achieving Africa's development objectives, including those of the New Partnership, particularly the eradication of poverty and the achievement of inclusive and sustained economic growth and development.'

LPI EGM Discusses Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, and Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

UNECA7 July 2014: The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) organized an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Framework and the implementation plan for piloting the Framework, an area that is highlighted in the African Union (AU) Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges.
