7 May 2013: Participants at the Third Global Meeting of the International Dialogue on Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (IDPS) have issued 'The Washington Communique,' appealing to the UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP) to tackle conflict and fragility.
14 May 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the May newsletter of the 'Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure Governance Initiative,' which provides an overview of successes achieved over the past year and planned activities for the near future.
This High-Level Symposium is the first major preparatory event for the 2014 Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The multi-stakeholder dialogue will include traditional donors, Southern development cooperation providers and representatives of private philanthropic organizations, local governments, parliaments and civil society, to explore the purposes of a renewed global partnership, its guiding principles, and key features of a post-2015 monitoring and accountability framework. The Symposium is expected to contribute to the post-2015 development agenda.
The Russian Federation has set as the objective of its 2013 Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20): developing a set of measures aimed at boosting sustainable, inclusive and balanced growth and jobs creation around the world. The G20 will look at eight areas in particular in 2013: framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth; jobs and employment; international financial architecture reform; strengthening financial regulation; energy sustainability; development for all; enhancing multilateral trade; and fighting corruption. The G20 brings together finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries - Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and the US - plus the EU. The G20 Leaders Summit in September 2013 is preceded by a series of outreach events organized in five streams: think tanks; business; labour; civil society and youth.
8 May 2013: The SEED Initiative has launched its 2013 SEED Awards, calling for entries from start-up entrepreneurs that aim to generate environmental, social and economic benefits at the local level, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, in developing countries, least developed countries (LDCs), or emerging economies.
10 May 2013: During the three-day meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, of the 23rd World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa, from 8-10 May 2013, global leaders in business, government and civil society discussed a wide range of challenges facing the region, and recent advances in governance and economic growth.
April 2013: The UN Development Programme's (UNDP) Environment and Energy Group (EEG) has released a report, titled ‘Towards Transformational Change: UNDP's Work in Environment and Sustainable Development 2008-2012.' The publication features a collection of stories from around the world in four strategic areas: mainstreaming environment and energy; mobilizing environmental finance; promoting adaptation to climate change; and expanding access to environmental and energy services for the poor.
23 March 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) reported plans by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) International Resource Panel to prepare a study on REDD+ and the green economy.
2 May 2013: The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), the Uganda Water and Sanitation NGO Network (UWASNET), WaterAid East Africa, End Water Poverty, Sanitation and Water for All and the African Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (ANEW) hosted the first East Africa Civil Society Forum on 'Tracking Progress on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Commitments.' Forum participants committed to advocating for and implementing WASH services to meet international and national commitments.
26 April 2013: International crime undermines achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and sustainable development, according to Yury Fedotov, Head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in a statement at the 22nd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ). The CCPCJ, which was held from 22-26 April 2013, in Vienna, Austria, adopted resolutions on the rule of law in the post-2015 development agenda and on illicit trafficking in protected species of wild fauna and flora, among others.
