First US-Africa Summit Addresses Energy, Food Security [viewed]

us.africa.summit6 August 2014: The US-Africa Summit, which brought together over 50 Heads of State from Africa and US President Barack Obama, addressed, inter alia: promoting inclusive sustainable development; expanding trade and investment ties; engaging young African leaders; and expanding cooperation on peace and security. The Summit also featured sessions on resilience and food security in a changing climate, and combatting wildlife trafficking.

African and US Leaders Discuss Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

Event: First Africa Regional Mountain Meeting [viewed]

The First African Mountains Regional Forum will take place under the theme, ‘Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa'. The Forum aims to frame a regional agenda for sustainable mountain development in African mountains as well as to enhance collaboration among African government institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector.

The Forum's objectives are to: identify strategic actions to address major emerging regional issues, such as climate change; and provide an opportunity for stakeholders to enhance understanding of common regional conservation and development issues, including challenges related to climate change, energy, food security and water in African mountain regions. The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the African Mountain Partnerships Champions Committee are organizing the forum in partnership with the East African Community (EAC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

OWG Co-Chairs Reflect on Consensus Outcome [viewed]

OWG28 July 2014: In a letter to Member States, the Co-Chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) express their hope for a far-reaching impact of the outcome agreed at the 13th and final session of the OWG (OWG 13), held on 14-19 July 2014. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, and Csaba Kőrösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary, note that the Group's report was approved with “only a handful of expressions of reservations on some targets,” and is "truly indicative of a global consensus."
