11 May 2012: An informal ministerial meeting took place to address small island developing States’ (SIDS) position for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), on 9 May 2012, in Bridgetown, Barbados. Representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) stressed a focus on “the day after Rio." Other delegates addressed issues relating to utilization of ocean resources; gender aspects of resource access; principles of rotation between Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS), Pacific and Caribbean; and strengthening of governance structures.

April 2012: The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG) has published the latest issues of its biodiversity and society bulletin, called “Biosoc,” and its monthly newsletter. The PCLG is a multi-stakeholder forum, coordinated by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), for promoting dialogue and fostering learning on the links between biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction.

5 May 2012: The African Development Bank's (AfDB) second green growth seminar highlighted the involvement of civil society in promoting green growth in Africa. Presenters from Oxfam provided an overview of their initiatives in the region, and offered evidence of inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere. Participants were also briefed on the AfDB's engagement with civil society.

8 May 2012: An Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change brought together representatives from 30 countries, including from least developed countries (LDCs) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to build on the achievements of the Durban Climate Change Conference. The meeting, which was hosted by the EU, also provided an opportunity for Ministers to discuss the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The 14th Regular Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN-14) will provide a platform for African Ministers to debate the key outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and address other emerging issues related to sustainable development and the environment in Africa. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to the Ministers to refine their strategies on a common approach to engaging with the international community in the climate change negotiation process and in preparation of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 18), to take place at the end of 2012 in Doha, Qatar. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has served as the Secretariat of AMCEN since its inception.

5 May 2012: The Second African Organic Conference concluded with the adoption of The Lusaka Declaration on Mainstreaming Organic Agriculture into the African Development Agenda, which urges the African Union (AU), including the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), to implement the African Organic Action Plan. The Conference aimed to showcase the role of organic agriculture in ensuring food security and poverty alleviation.
