Event: Arab Water Week 2015 [viewed]

Arab Water Week 2015 will convene under the theme 'innovations and sustainable solutions for the water sector in the Arab region'. The meeting will address a variety of sub-themes, including, inter alia: the energy efficiency dilemma in water and wastewater utilities; social responsibility and water for marginalized people; water utilities adaptation to climate change, current status and future perspectives; integrated water resources management (IWRM) and good water governance in the Arab region; the Millennium Development Goal (MDG)+ initiative towards sustainable water resources management within the sustainable development goals (SDGs); benchmarking as a tool for optimizing water and wastewater operations; and water public action and awareness in a fast, changing world.

UNGA Concludes Structured Dialogues on Technology Facilitation [viewed]

UNGA23 July 2014: The UN General Assembly held the fourth "structured dialogue" for Member States, the private sector, and civil society to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The co-moderators of the dialogue will submit a report, along with elements for a procedural resolution, to the UNGA President by the end of July, and expect to receive further guidance in early September.

BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.

Event: Sixth BRICS Summit [viewed]

The sixth Summit of the BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will convene in Fortaleza and Brasília, Brazil, from 15-16 July, under the theme 'Inclusive Growth, Sustainable Solutions'. The Summit will discuss the establishment of the BRICS Development Bank, aimed at financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects, and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement for assisting countries of the bloc. Discussions will also be held on social inclusion and development. The Summit is expected to result in the signing of two primary financial agreements, an action plan for common social indicators methodologies, and the Fortaleza Declaration containing views of the group on matters on the international agenda and of cooperation within the BRICS. Preceding the Summit, meetings of the BRICS finance ministers, central bank governors and ministers of trade, the BRICS Business Forum and Business Council, and the BRICS Financal Forum will be held on 14 July in Fortaleza.

SDSN Launches Deep Decarbonization Pathways Report, South Asia Network [viewed]

unsdsn8 July 2014: The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) presented its interim report on the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project (DDPP) to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The report, ‘Pathways to Deep Decarbonization,' illustrates options for how major emitting countries can decrease their carbon emissions to achieve a low-carbon economy by 2050.

G-77/China, Others Hold Side Events at First UNEA [viewed]

unea27 June 2014: The 50th Anniversary of the Group of 77 and China (G-77/China) was commemorated during the first meeting of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23-27 June 2014. The commemoration was one of over 40 UNEA side events, which also included discussions on air quality in African cities, sustainable consumption and production (SCP), sound management of chemicals and waste, illegal trade in wildlife, and green and decent jobs.

GGKP Announces Green Growth Publications [viewed]

The assessment report, titled 'Green Growth in Practice: Lessons from Country Experiences,' consists of evaluations of green growth programs around the world, and was written by 75 authors engaged by the GGBP initiative.

UNEP Discusses Financing Green Economy at UNEA [viewed]

UNEP25 June 2014: Environment leaders, policy makers and financial experts convened for the Symposium on Financing the Green Economy on the sidelines of the first meeting of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). The Symposium examined how private financial capital can be mobilized to deliver long-term sustainable prosperity, as a necessary complement to public expenditure. It was organized by the UN Environment Programme's Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and the UNEP Inquiry on The Design of a Sustainable Financial System (UNEP Inquiry), and took place on 25 June 2014, in Nairobi, Kenya.
