14 May 2012: Asian countries recently discussed the development and use of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora's (CITES) e-permitting systems, and e-permitting's role in promoting legal, sustainable and traceable international trade in CITES-listed species.
12 May 2012: The UN Pavilion has opened at the International Exposition 2012 (Expo 2012) in Yeosu, Republic of Korea, under the theme "Oceans and Coasts: Connecting Our Lives, Ensuring Our Future—The Choice is Yours." The Expo is the first international exposition focusing on ocean, coasts and islands in international recognition of their role, and is organized around the overall theme "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities."
11 May 2012: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced that Thailand’s Prime Minster, Yingluck Shinawatra, has joined the Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign, a joint initiative of the UNWTO and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). The initiative aims to rally support for tourism among world leaders, encouraging them to acknowledge tourism’s key role in delivering more sustained and balanced growth, and to give the sector greater priority in national policies.
10 May 2012: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Republic of Korea have agreed to expand their cooperation on various issues, including green industry. Current cooperation takes place through various ministries and organizations, such as the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and addresses preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), as well as issuing joint publications on green growth and green industry.
April 2012: The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG) has published the latest issues of its biodiversity and society bulletin, called “Biosoc,” and its monthly newsletter. The PCLG is a multi-stakeholder forum, coordinated by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), for promoting dialogue and fostering learning on the links between biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction.
10 May 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released its regional human development report for Asia Pacific, titled "One Planet to Share – Sustaining Human Progress in a Changing Climate." The report emphasizes that, to achieve a shift to a greener economy, countries in the region will need to change their production patterns, including in the energy, industrial and agricultural sectors.
5 May 2012: The 45th meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was organized around the theme “Inclusive Growth through Better Governance and Partnerships” and addressed how to bring the benefits of Asia's growth to all, especially the poor.
8 May 2012: An Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change brought together representatives from 30 countries, including from least developed countries (LDCs) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to build on the achievements of the Durban Climate Change Conference. The meeting, which was hosted by the EU, also provided an opportunity for Ministers to discuss the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
This Summit is hosted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Government of the Republic of Korea, in partnership with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank. It will convene top economic and environmental experts to discuss the ways in which international cooperation can be strengthened to support countries that pursue green growth.
3 May 2012: The World Bank published a book titled, “Sustainable Low-Carbon City Development in China,” offering practical lessons to policymakers in China to organize and coordinate sustainable low-carbon urban development.
