UNESCAP7 August 2014: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has issued the Chair's summary of a regional consultation on ensuring accountability for implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. The consultation took place during ESCAP's 70th session in Bangkok, Thailand, on 5-6 August 2014. The meeting was the second in a series of regional consultations on accountability organized by the UN regional commissions.

ESCAP Launches 70-Year Review of Social, Economic Development [viewed]

UNESCAP6 August 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) launched a 70-year review of social and economic development in the region, on the sidelines of its 70th session in Bangkok, Thailand. Titled ‘Asia and the Pacific: A Story of Transformation and Resurgence,' the review is a "survey of surveys" that traces the story of development in the region, based on ESCAP's annual Economic and Social Surveys since 1947, when the Commission was known as the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE).

Consultations on Post-2015 Summit to Resume in September [viewed]

UNGA1 August 2014: UN Member States decided to postpone concluding the informal consultations on organizational modalities of the UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. The consultations are expected to resume in early September. Consultations started on 27 June 2014 at UN Headquarters, in New York, US, and continued throughout July, with delegations discussing a draft resolution and annexes that elaborate on key elements, which were circulated by the co-facilitators, Robert Guba Aisi of Papua New Guinea, and Ib Petersen of Denmark.

UNDP Administrator Outlines Long-Term Development View [viewed]

UNDP7 August 2014: UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark stressed the need to “get ahead of the curve of future crises and disasters to avert huge and costly development setbacks and lives lost,” in the Aspen Institute's Third Annual Madeleine K. Albright Global Development Lecture. In 'Making Sense of the World We Live In: The Development Contribution,' Clark highlighted: the work involved in achieving transformational change; the importance of investments in building resilience; challenges in nation building; and progress and next steps on the post-2015 development agenda.

African and US Leaders Discuss Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

Event: Green Standards Week [viewed]

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is organizing Green Standards Week under the theme, 'Setting the Vision for Smart Sustainable Cities'. The Week will feature a high-level forum on the main theme and forums on related themes, including: 'Green Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for a Sustainable Resource Efficient Economy;' 'E-waste: The Inconvenient Truth;' and 'Using electromagnetic fields (EMF) to Achieve the Smartest Sustainable City'. The last day of the event will be dedicated to the regional meeting of 'ITU-T Study Group 5 Regional Group for Asia and the Pacific' (SG5 RG-AP). Overall, the Week will aim to promote: green ICTs as a catalyst to sustainable development; e-waste management; and how ICTs can help build smart, sustainable cities. The Week is expected to attract specialists from a variety of international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector, policy-makers, engineers, designers, city planners, government officials, regulators and standards experts. ITU is the UN's ICT agency and coordinates international cooperation on radio spectrum, satellite orbits, communication infrastructure development and standards.

Event: Regional Consultation on Accountability for the Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

The Regional Consultation on Accountability for the Post-2015 Development Agenda will share perspectives on elements that may constitute a regional accountability framework nested within an wider framework with national and global links, and

with emphasis on the key role of the Regional Commission and intergovernmental platforms, such as the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) as the annual regional forum to feed into the High-Level Political Forum. It is understood that the subject of accountability will be further revisited once the post-2015 agenda is globally adopted and the

SDGs are agreed upon, however, the regional consultation provides the opportunity to feed into current global discussions shaping the future accountability framework. A Chair's Summary of the Regional Consultation on Accountability for the Post-2015 Development Agenda will be transmitted to the Secretary-General by mid-October 2014 to inform his Synthesis Report that would launch the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda.
