OWG Co-Chairs Reflect on Consensus Outcome [viewed]

OWG28 July 2014: In a letter to Member States, the Co-Chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) express their hope for a far-reaching impact of the outcome agreed at the 13th and final session of the OWG (OWG 13), held on 14-19 July 2014. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, and Csaba Kőrösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary, note that the Group's report was approved with “only a handful of expressions of reservations on some targets,” and is "truly indicative of a global consensus."

Civil Society Reacts to Proposed SDGs [viewed]

OWGJuly 2014: In reaction to the final outcome of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which it proposed SDGs at the conclusion of the 13th session (OWG 13), a number of Major Groups and civil society organizations have released papers and press releases commenting on the proposal. The majority of reactions suggest the outcome is a significant step forward, while also highlighting specific concerns. Many groups expressed appreciation for the OWG's inclusiveness, noting that full and meaningful participation of civil society is being recognized as an essential aspect of the new global agenda.

Event: 2015 Zaragoza Conference [viewed]

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. This invitation-only event also will help UN-Water to prepare for World Water Day, which will focus on “water and sustainable development” in 2015.

UNGA Concludes Structured Dialogues on Technology Facilitation [viewed]

UNGA23 July 2014: The UN General Assembly held the fourth "structured dialogue" for Member States, the private sector, and civil society to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The co-moderators of the dialogue will submit a report, along with elements for a procedural resolution, to the UNGA President by the end of July, and expect to receive further guidance in early September.

ILO Calls for Engagement of Labor Sector in Green Economy [viewed]

ilo-eu18 July 2014: At a Joint Meeting of EU Environment and Labor ministers, hosted by the Government of Italy, the International Labour Organization (ILO) urged the ministers to align their policies on sustainable development. ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said a deliberate shift to a greener economy could promote job creation and help mitigate climate change.

BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.

ISU, EDF and 50in10 Report Focuses on Financing Sustainable Fisheries [viewed]

Towards Investment in Sustainable Fisheries10 July 2014: The transition to more sustainable fisheries management systems can yield financial returns and deliver ecological, economic and social benefits if fisheries are structured as “investable propositions,” according to a report by the Prince of Wales' International Sustainability Unit (ISU), the US Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and 50in10. The organizations launched the report, titled ‘Towards Investment in Sustainable Fisheries: A Framework for Financing the Transition' at a conference on ‘Financing the transition towards a sustainable blue economy.'
