SIDS Ministers Discuss Position for Rio+20 [viewed]

11 May 2012: An informal ministerial meeting took place to address small island developing States’ (SIDS) position for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), on 9 May 2012, in Bridgetown, Barbados. Representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) stressed a focus on “the day after Rio." Other delegates addressed issues relating to utilization of ocean resources; gender aspects of resource access; principles of rotation between Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS), Pacific and Caribbean; and strengthening of governance structures.

SIDS High-Level Conference on SE4ALL Adopts Barbados Declaration [viewed]

Denis Lowe, Minister of Environment and Drainage, Barbados, and Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, Resident Representative, UNDP Barbados9 May 2012: On the second day of the SIDS High-Level Conference on Sustainable Development for All (SE4ALL), which convened in Bridgetown, Barbados, from 7-8 May 2012, delegates from the three SIDS regions – the Pacific, Caribbean and Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS) – unanimously adopted the Barbados Declaration, which will be taken to the Rio+20 Conference in June.

Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change Calls for Building on Durban [viewed]

EU8 May 2012: An Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change brought together representatives from 30 countries, including from least developed countries (LDCs) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to build on the achievements of the Durban Climate Change Conference. The meeting, which was hosted by the EU, also provided an opportunity for Ministers to discuss the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Event: Community Forest Management to Assure Sustainable Development [viewed]

This side event is being organized during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) by the Rights and Resources Initiative, Alianza Mesoamericana de Pueblos y Bosques (AMPB) and Consejo Civil Mexicano para la Silvicultura Sostenible (CCMSS). The aim of the event is to reflect on the role of forest communities and indigenous peoples in sustainable development. It will highlight a new global analysis of the benefits and impacts of tenure reform around the world since 1992, and share lessons and experiences from Mesoamerica, specifically Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.

UNRISD Paper Examines Sustainable Development through Policy Integration in Latin America [viewed]

May 2012: The UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) has published a paper on "Sustainable Development through Policy Integration in Latin America," as part of the Occasional Paper series for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The paper examines three projects, two in Brazil and one in Ecuador, to understand how social and political actors govern natural resource use to promote ecosystem protection, biodiversity, renewable energy use and poverty reduction.

Brazilian Senate Approves Rio+20 Hosting Arrangements [viewed]

ILO, Munich RE Foundation Highlight Innovations in Microinsurance [viewed]

ILO10 April 2012: The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Munich RE Foundation have released the second volume of "Microinsurance Compendium, Protecting the Poor," which highlights that the number of microinsured people has reached almost 500 million. The report emphasizes the role of microinsurance in poverty alleviation when combined with social protection, risk prevention, mitigation, and vulnerability reduction.
