16 April 2011: At its 17th meeting, the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) accredited new National Implementing Entities (NIE) from Kenya, Mexico and Argentina, and approved a collection of project concepts and a proposal.
The World Energy Forum, which is being held for the first time outside UN Headquarters in New York, seeks to bring together world leaders, international organizations, financial institutions and other stakeholders to discuss progress towards cleaner, safer and more sustainable energy as well as how to achieve universal access to modern energy services. As 2012 has been designated as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, one of the main objectives of the Forum is to chart a roadmap for a sustainable energy mix that can fuel global economic and social development.
30 March 2012: In her address to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Arab States Regional Meeting of Resident Representatives in Rabat, Morocco, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark highlighted that, despite achievements and progress made on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a lot of work still remains to be done before 2015, including reduction of extreme and absolute poverty, food insecurity and poor nutrition.
23 March 2012: The Equator Initiative has announced its 2012 Equator Prize winners, honoring 25 initiatives from around the globe for their role in advancing sustainable developments through innovative and pioneering projects.
21 March 2012: In an effort to create a favorable investment climate for private sector involvement in agribusiness, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are collaborating on projects worth $2.2 million to develop improved policies and legal frameworks.
21 March 2012: During a side event to provide information and updates on UN inter-agency activities and initiatives related to sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission launched the "Global Outlook on Sustainable Consumption and Production Policies."
10 February 2012: The 17th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties (COP 17) to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and its Protocols concluded with the adoption of the Paris Declaration, which calls for a “blue” economy to safeguard and promote a clean, healthy, and productive Mediterranean environment.
25 January 2012: The synthesis report of the five regional science and technology workshops organized by the International Council for Science and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is now available. The results of the workshops were presented at the regional preparatory meetings for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
18 January 2012: The UN-REDD Programme has released its first newsletter of 2012, highlighting the Democratic Republic of Congo's new national forest monitoring system, which was launched at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 17), as well as updates on Mongolia’s REDD+ roadmap and details on three new publications recently released by the Programme.
11 January 2012: In his remarks at the Group of 77 chairmanship handover ceremony in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the importance of the leadership of the G77 in ensuring that "concrete actionable measures" are adopted at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
