Event: Arab Water Week 2015 [viewed]

Arab Water Week 2015 will convene under the theme 'innovations and sustainable solutions for the water sector in the Arab region'. The meeting will address a variety of sub-themes, including, inter alia: the energy efficiency dilemma in water and wastewater utilities; social responsibility and water for marginalized people; water utilities adaptation to climate change, current status and future perspectives; integrated water resources management (IWRM) and good water governance in the Arab region; the Millennium Development Goal (MDG)+ initiative towards sustainable water resources management within the sustainable development goals (SDGs); benchmarking as a tool for optimizing water and wastewater operations; and water public action and awareness in a fast, changing world.

UNGA Concludes Structured Dialogues on Technology Facilitation [viewed]

UNGA23 July 2014: The UN General Assembly held the fourth "structured dialogue" for Member States, the private sector, and civil society to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The co-moderators of the dialogue will submit a report, along with elements for a procedural resolution, to the UNGA President by the end of July, and expect to receive further guidance in early September.

UNDP Annual Report Showcases Achievements by Region [viewed]

UNDPJune 2014: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released its 2013/2014 Annual Report, titled ‘New Partnerships for Development.' According to the forward by UNDP Administrator Helen Clark, the report shows how UNDP is evolving in its operations, as outlined in its 2014-2017 Strategic Plan, and notes its alignment of efforts behind inclusive, sustainable and resilient development. Clark also emphasizes that UNDP “will continue a final push to achieve the MDGs” in more than 50 countries.

Major Groups and Stakeholders Forward Input to First UNEA Meeting [viewed]

unea23 June 2014: Ahead of the first session of the UN Environment Assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) met to facilitate the preparations of Major Groups and Stakeholders towards the first UNEA, allowing them to discuss the main UNEA themes and to prepare their input to UNEA. UNEA will hold its first session on 23-27 June to discuss ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, including sustainable consumption and production (SCP).' The session will also address illegal trade in wildlife and related environmental crime.

UNGA Holds Third Dialogue on Technology Facilitation [viewed]

UNGA4 June 2014: UN Member States, international organizations, research institutions, and civil society convened to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The third structured dialogue on technology facilitation organized by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) under Resolution 68/210 took place on 4 June 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.

May 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

ebrd-worldbank-adb-gef-eib-afdbMay 2014: During May, international and regional financial institutions, including the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), undertook a variety of actions related to water resources, including presenting the results of existing projects, participating in regional conferences and approving new loans. Projects this month addressed issues including transboundary water cooperation, water supply and sanitation, hydroelectric generation, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and ecosystem service conservation, among others.

GWP National Consultations Address Post-2015 Water Goal [viewed]

Experts Conclude Fourth Session on Sustainable Development Financing [viewed]

UNGA16 May 2014: The Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) held its Fourth Session, during which expert members discussed the draft report of the Committee. According to a briefing with the Co-Chairs on 16 May 2014, the Committee has reached agreement regarding a structure to mobilize all financial sources – international, domestic, private and public – using the Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration as guides for exploring synergies and complementarities between different financial flows.
