Group of Friends on Green Economy Convenes First Workshop

20 February 2011: In preparation for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio 2012), the Group of Friends on the Green Economy at the UN hosted the Green Economy in Practice Workshop on 11 February 2011, in New York, US.

The workshop was an informal event on green economy jointly organized by 10 Missions of UN member States on the initiative of the President of the 65th Session of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss (Switzerland). The goal of the workshop was to frame characteristics of the Green Economy, and provide case examples as well as a platform for discussion. Speakers highlighted the need for “new approaches,” as currents trends in population, consumption and pollution combined with positive feedbacks are creating unsustainable pressure on our natural resources and environment. Delegates from Mexico, India, Niger and the Republic of Korea provided case studies of transitioning to a Green Economy.

The workshop was the first of three planned by the Group of Friends on Green Economy, which includes the Governments of Egypt, Gabon, Grenada, Hungary, Indonesia, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Sweden and Switzerland. [Workshop Summary] [Video of Workshop]
